Internal Workshop: "Hohen Viecheln"

Internal Workshop: „Working at the sharp end at Hohen Viecheln: from bone and antler to Early Mesolithic life in Northern Europe, ZBSA Schleswig March 14th–16th 2016

As a part of the project "Neubewertung von Chronologie und Stratigraphie des frühholozänen Fundplatzes Hohen Viecheln (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der diagnostischen Knochenartefakte“ ("Re-evaluation of the chronology and stratigraphy of the early Holocene site Hohen Viecheln (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany), with particular focus on the diagnostic bone artefacts"), which is granted from May 2015 to October 2016 by the German Research Foundation (DFG) the workshop will set the wider frame for comparison of the site Hohen Viecheln. As special emphasis is laid upon the points and harpoons and their chronology in the project, the workshop brings together colleagues from Russia to the Netherlands and the circum-Baltic area to discuss these artefacts and related topics.

The workshop “Working at the sharp end at Hohen Viecheln: from bone and antler to Early Mesolithic life in Northern Europe” is used to present and discuss the new results from Hohen Viecheln on a comparative and international context. Light will alse be shed on the status quo of bone and antler tools and especially bone points of the European Early Mesolithic. Thus the workshop will consequently consolidate the state-of-the-art of Early Mesolithic bone and antler tools. To approach this, typological and chronological developments in different areas of research will be presented as well as case studies and general overviews in Northern Europe.

The outcomes will be published as a workshop proceedings volume of “Untersuchungen und Materialien zur Steinzeit in Schleswig-Holstein und im Ostseeraum”. The purpose is to ensure that the current state of research on the Early Mesolithic in Northern Europe will be presented in the workshop publication.
