The ring forts of Western Holstein

— filed under:

Dr. Thorsten Lemm

There are, to date, 16 known ring forts in Western Holstein, constructed between AD 750 and 1100. They provide evidence of the political power structures existing north of the River Elbe and are closely connected to the historically documented military conflicts between Saxons, Franks, Danes and Slavs in this area. Within the framework of this project, the various structures, together with their environment, will be extensively analysed and interpreted for the first time and some, as yet, unpublished excavation results will be made accessible for research. The archaeological information will, as a consequence, be augmented from relevant historical and onomastic sources. Furthermore, field-walking surveys in the areas around the strongholds, together with limited excavation of selected objects, will further complement the archaeological data (further information ►)
